 amazon fulfillment center management structure

There are 4 main departments: (receiving is kinda part of Picking)

Receiving (pallets to shelves)

  1. Picking (shelves to carts, carts to conveyer belts)
  2. Sort (some is automated by giant sortation machines, but people also sort)
picking orders (considered part of sort. Going around with a cart, filling a box with an order collated by the sort machines.
  3. Pack (IMO the easiest department… put Sealed Air into boxes and line them up into machines that scan the labels and slap shipping label on ‘em.)
  4. Ship (packing the trucks, like Tetris)

Every department is connected by a series of conveyor belts.

Each department has a lead manager, and they report to senior management.
There’s an “eye in the sky” control tower that monitors flow between departments, and also watches cameras all around the FC.

Managers will share personnel (associates) with other departments when needed.

Premium orders (1 day, 2 day guaranteed deliveries) get prioritized at certain times of the day, resulting in havoc and sprinting, sometimes requiring re-picking of items, and sort frequently manually packs boxes and shuttles them to the trucks to get out on time.

So, reporting and hierarchy is pretty flat… there’s associates, team lead (like an associate who is the manager’s right-hand (wo)man, managers (1–2 per department), then senior managers (a handful per FC).
